Superior Court accepting applications for Commissioner

 

APPLICATIONS ARE BEING ACCEPTED FOR SUPERIOR COURT COMMISSIONER

Presiding Judge Danelle Liwski and Presiding Juvenile Judge Michael J. Butler announce that a joint Merit Selection Committee for the Superior Court and the Juvenile Court is accepting applications for anticipated Commissioner positions which may become open in the next twelve months.

 

Applications for Commissioner are accepted through October 16, 2024, by 12 PM which is the same deadline as for the currently open Hearing Officer position. If interested, please apply for both. Please note, the final selection for Commissioner will be announced first. This will provide the applicants for both positions another opportunity to pursue.

Indicate clearly on a cover letter/note which position(s) are you interested to be considered for.

The current annual salary for a Commissioner is $162,000, and it will increase on January 1, 2025, to $171,000 annual per HB2897 (The Commissioner salary is set at 90% of the statutory salary for a Superior Court Judge).

 

The duties of this position include serving as a judicial officer in areas including family law, child support, child welfare, juvenile delinquency, probate, guardianship and conservancy, mental health proceedings under Title 36 of the Arizona Revised Statutes, and any other areas as the Presiding Judges may require. The judicial officer may also be appointed as judge pro tem for no additional compensation. The person selected for the position should expect to be rotated between Superior Court and Juvenile Court at the discretion of the Presiding Judges. This position operates under the legal authority granted in ARS §12-213 and A.R.S. §8-231 and serves at the pleasure of the Presiding Judge.

 

A commissioner of the superior court must be:

  • Admitted to the practice of law in and a resident of this state for five years next preceding taking office.
  • A United States citizen and a resident of the county in which appointed.
  • A resident at the county seat or at such other city or town within the jurisdiction of the judge making the appointment as may be designated by the presiding judge.

 

In addition, the Arizona Superior Court in Pima County has the following requirements for applicants:

  • Must not have any disciplinary matters pending before the State Bar Disciplinary Board and must not have any criminal charges pending before any court.
  • Must have substantial courtroom experience. Family law, juvenile law and/or probate experience is not required but may be helpful.

Deadline to apply is: 
NO LATER THAN WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 16, 2024, BY 12:00 PM.

 

The applications will be submitted to the Hon. Greg Sakall and the Hon. Janet Bostwick, Co-Chairs of the Merit Selection Committee. The Committee will review the applications, interview selected applicants, and recommend candidates to the Presiding Judges, who will make the appointment(s). The Committee and the Presiding Judges may treat the applications filed as an application for any additional similar vacancy or vacancies that become known after the application has been submitted.
