Certified Law Enforcement Officers acting in their official capacity may retain their weapons while in the building. The following procedures were established for law enforcement officers who wish to retain their weapons while in the Superior Court building.
All law enforcement officers, uniform and non-uniform, shall display their departmental photo ID to Court Security upon entry to the building. They shall also advise them of their purpose, affirming that they are acting in their official capacity and providing their destination in the building.
Non-uniform officers shall check out a Superior Court Pass at the security checkpoint. This pass along with their departmental ID shall be worn in such a manner that it is easily visible to Court Security and the public. Court passes shall be returned to the security checkpoint prior to leaving the building.
Any law enforcement officer not in possession of a valid departmental photo ID will not be allowed to bring a weapon into the court building and must comply with security screening requirements.
For the purposes of this policy a weapon is described as a firearm, knife, ammunition, impact weapon, electronic restraint, chemical agent or explosive device.
Official capacity refers to any activity that arises from employment as a law enforcement officer that requires entering Superior Court. It does NOT include appearing as a victim, witness, spectator, or party in any Juvenile Court proceeding, in which they are involved outside their official capacity.
Any law enforcement agency or officer requiring a waiver to these procedures should contact the Court Security Manager at 724-8371 or the Judicial Security Commander at 724-8420 in advance. Waivers will be considered on a case-by-case basis. Undercover officers should contact the above if special accommodations are needed.
