Presiding Judge Jeffery T. Bergin announces that the Superior Court’s Merit Selection Committee is accepting applications for the position of full-time Judge Pro Tempore. The position became open upon the appointment of the Hon. Kimberly H. Ortiz to Superior Court Judge by Governor Doug Ducey.
The duties of this position primarily include presiding over specialty criminal courts, such as Drug Court, Drug Treatment Alternative to Prison (DTAP), Restitution Court, Mental Health Court (MHC), Substance Use, Mental Health Response Team (SMRT), and Supportive Treatment and Engagement Programs (STEPs).
Additional duties may include changes of plea, motions to modify release conditions, sentencings, petitions to revoke, evidentiary hearings, and other criminal matters as needed. It is not anticipated that this Pro Tempore position will include a traditional trial calendar.
Qualifications and salary information are as noted in A.R.S. 12-142 and 12-143. The current annual salary is $149,382.
A judge pro tempore of the superior court shall be not less than thirty years of age; of good moral character; admitted to the practice of law in this state for not less than five years next preceding their appointment, and a resident of this state for not less than five years next preceding their appointment. In addition, Pima County Superior Court requires that the candidate does not have any disciplinary matters pending before the State Bar Disciplinary Board or criminal charges pending before any court. Criminal law experience is required.

The Committee will review the applications, interview selected applicants, and recommend candidates to the Presiding Judge, who shall make the appointment.
