Superior Court in Pima County Accepting Applications for Two Upcoming Court Commissioner Vacancies Through December 8, 2023

Superior Court Presiding Judge Jeffrey T. Bergin and Juvenile Court Presiding Judge Michael J. Butler announce that the Courts’ joint Merit Selection Committee is accepting applications for two full-time Court Commissioner positions, due to the upcoming retirements of Hon. Jane Butler and Hon. Cathleen Linn.

The appointees will serve as judicial officers in areas including family law, child support, child welfare, juvenile delinquency, probate, guardianship and conservancy, mental health proceedings under Title 36 of the Arizona Revised Statutes, and other areas as the presiding judges may require. The judicial officers may also be appointed judges pro tempore for no additional compensation. Those selected for the positions should expect to be rotated between the Superior and Juvenile Courts at the discretion of the presiding judges.

These positions operate under the legal authority granted in ARS §12-213 and A.R.S. §8-231, and serve at the pleasure of the presiding judge. The current annual salary is $148,230. (Effective January 1, 2024, the annual salary will increase to $162,000.)

A commissioner of the Superior Court shall:

• Be admitted to the practice of law in and a resident of this state for five years next preceding taking office.

• Be a United States citizen and a resident of the county in which appointed.

• Reside at the county seat or at such other city or town within the jurisdiction of the judge making the appointment, or as may be designated by the judge.

In addition, the Arizona Superior Court in Pima County has the following requirements:

• Individual(s) must not have disciplinary matters pending before the State Bar Disciplinary Board, nor criminal charges pending before any court.

• The applicants should have substantial courtroom experience. While family law, juvenile law, and probate experience may be helpful, they are not required to be a successful candidate.

Applications will be submitted to Hon. Danelle Liwski and Hon. Janet Bostwick, co-chairpersons of the Merit Selection Committee. The Committee will review the applications on December 15, 2023, interview selected applicants on January 12, 2024, and recommend candidates to Judge Bergin and Judge Butler, who shall make the appointments All applications will be a matter of public record.
