Pima County Public Library at the Juvenile Detention Center

Juvenile educational programs, provided by the Detention Center and CAPE, are enhanced by services provided by the Pima County Public Library.  The library makes available materials that meet the educational, recreational, informational, and cultural needs of detained youth.  This valuable service aids in the rehabilitation, social development, educational competence, school completion and successful re-entry of youth into the community.

Pima County Public Library operates a youth-tailored Library Outpost at the Center. The Librarian-in-Residence and supporting PCPL staff work with the PCJCC Programs Director to help youth more easily discover the reading materials they seek, make them more independent in the space and to maximize their visits to the collection.  In addition Workshops series and residencies focusing on the Arts, Writing and Reading connect active learning to the collection and to youth interests. Programming is scheduled during school intersessions, those times when the youth are expected have more downtime.

To promote reading and encourage future library use, the Library Outpost also offers program kits that align with PCPL’s Teen 365 program.

Examples include:

  • A variety of programming designed to inspire and educate youth.  Readers’ theater, origami, art, journaling, and music programs are some of the most recent offerings.

  • Opportunities for youth to volunteer and help maintain the library.

  • Library cards for youth to use at any Pima County Public Library location upon their return to the community.

  • A free book and bag filled with library resources upon release.
