Our teens are the future leaders of our society, and the Superior Court believes it is essential for them to understand the role of the judicial branch of government as a critical ingredient to a healthy democracy; further, to recognize they have a voice in that democracy. Art can be a convincing form of dialogue.
To help facilitate communication using art, a wall on the first floor of the courthouse was offered for use by the Clerk of the Superior Court, ensuring almost everyone entering the court building has an opportunity to observe the artwork of the talented youth who attend high school in Pima County, and “hear” what they have to say.
The Courthouse Gallery was dedicated in December of 1997 and opened with a display of talent from the students of Flowing Wells High School. Since then, numerous high schools have enhanced the first floor of the courthouse by providing pieces of fine art and photography.
Each show is on display for about two months, and the students are honored for their participation with a visit to the courthouse, culminating in a certificate ceremony hosted by a judge and a representative from the clerk of court’s office. During the ceremony, each student-artist has the opportunity to convey the message behind their work, inviting an ongoing and essential dialogue.
